Emergency day!!

Today we went through the procedures in case anyone has a medical emergancy in our clinic. Eveything made sense in class so now we shall see if we are ever put into the situation! Hopefully not! Oh but I was reading my clinic manuel last night and had a dream that an earthquake and tornado hit the clinic! But don't worry, some very cute boy was here and hid by me! Made it all the worth while!

My first fake real paitient!

Today we were able to act that one of our peers was a real paitent! Oh it was nerve racking but I'm really glad that we were able to do this so that I was able to go through the whole process so that when I'm doing my real paitent I will be able to go through it so much smoother! I got all the way done too!

Seal what?

Today we were able to learn the PSR and how to classify them when probing, I really don't see the use of this for if you come across a pocket that is deeper then 6mm you have to record everything so if you find a deep pocket at the end you have to redo everything you just did! Oh crap!!! Anyways, I found that my molar is hard to put a sealent on since it has a flap of skin over it! Oh yeah!

Sealents

Well now all my teeth that did not need restorations have been sealed. I passed off my PE on the sandblaster, aka prophyjet, so no more swallowing the whole of the great salt lake! To do sealants I will have to remember all of the steps but I think that it will be okay, the order makes sense so it will come!

Salty?!

Today we learned the air/water polisher and I feel bad for any of my patients that have to endure that torture again!!! My face feels like I have just swam across the great salt lake! I did like the way that it seemed to clean off stains that I would not get my scaling or polishing, just don't plan to use it for just anyone. I am getting more comfortable with the posterior teeth and scaling, just seems to be so limited space back there!

Ultra Sonic!!!!

Oh yeah today we got to learn the ultra sonic! It was a blast! I really do like it for it puts less strain on your hands yet gets off the calculus! I did notice today while doing it that my adaption and angulation is finally coming and I don't have to think about it so much! That is so excititng! I do need to go home and practice my posterior scaling so that is my goal for this time!

Braces?!!!

Today we went over SELECTIVE polishing! Ok, so in clinic it wasn't very selective but it was good practice. I was able to work on braces and try the brush. It was a little more difficult but at the same time it really made you think of what you were doing and make sure that you are doing it the right way, oh and when you do it on normal teeth it is so much easier! I'm very excited that they are going to show us the ultra sonic tips this next week instead of next year! oh so excititng!!!!

Real mouths!!!

Well that was totally different scaling on the posterior teeth on an individual! I have to say that I do like it a lot more then a typodont! I felt much more comfortable on the anteriors but still a little shakey on the posteriors. I plan on going home and practicing for it worked with the anteriors, but my stomach is growling and there is a great halloween party that sounds like a blast!

Oh the posteriors!

Today we learned about the posterior scaling! I will have to admit that Im totally confused about it all! Oh well, my goal for the weekend is to become confident as I can in this technique. I am going to take home my instruments and practice on my typodont, I know that this is not like doing it on enamel but it will work for the correct angulation and adaption of the scalers, also choosing the correct working end! Oh and I passed off a lot of pe's so I am ahead! Heck yes!!!

Say Cheese!

Today we learned the intra oral camra, it doesn't seem that hard just to learn the steps of setting it up. I really enjoyed going through the steps on someone we have never worked on before, it made me feel so much better prepaired for our first patient! My goals though is to go home and practice more of the scaling and get the hang of the mandibulars. Oh and can I just say that I hate boys! Or mainly one right now!

Another one bites the dust!!!

Today was the big day, see if all your adaptation and angulation practicing has paid off!!! And glad to say I think mine has! We learned how to scale the anterior teeth today! Oh how exciting to have that pointed instrument in hand and hear the scraping of the teeth! Ok, so it was harder then I expected with braces but Im glad because on the next person it will be all the easier! What my goal for next time is to practice not "scooping" the calculus with the montarey jack!!! Just kidding, montanna jack, but to to toe and tooth!

Instruments???

Ok, that was a lot!!! I hope that going over the instruments will make so much more sense soon! I was so confused about what they were talking about but mainly all the names! I found that a common theme was there: If they are sickle then just on the supragingival and if they only have one cutting edge then subgingival (which seemed only to be the gracies). Oh well that is a start! My goal is to keep an open mind and start to memorize all of the names!

Blue or Purple?

Today we learned to do a paitents PFI. It was really helpfull to stain our plaque and see where we personally don't brush. I found that I miss my mandibular anterior teeth! I was going to try and pass off my explorning pe today but found that I got to be in the chair for everyone else and then pod rap happened so now no practice and bleeding gums. Oh well it was really nice to see the mistakes and good things that each were practicing and applying it to me!

Monday, October 8, 2007

Well thats over!

Today I was able to pass off the intra oral examtiation! It was a little intimidating for I felt that there was a lot of little things that I had to memorize, also not so great on pronouncing the anatomical features but I survived after a lot of studying! I am filling a little more confident in the patients mouth now that I have had some time exploring. I do not feel that comfortable fulcroming in the posterior teeth especially the maxilla, I will have to practice that more. I would love to be able to pass off the exploring pe next time but I think that will require a lot more studying!

Its making more sense!!!

Today we were able to probe on eachother a little more and it made so much more sense and came a little easier! I felt that my probe readings were more accurate and the bleeding was not due to my pressure. It is really hard trying to get to the back molars with using my mirror to see and not blocking my light! I do feel like I am not getting enough practice at all these skills. We only have about 14 or so days left in clinic till its a real patient! I am really nervouse! I have been practicing on my typodont but it is just so different in a real patients mouth! I find it really difficult to try and see from the posterior direction in the mirror! I am getting a little better and that is my goal for homework.

Probing

Today the art of probing was tried. I guess you should ask my pod partner how I did since she was the one that was nice enough to let me in her mouth! I was able to practice on a full set of braces so I'm pretty sure that it was a little harder then it would of been but I am so excited that I was able to have the practice. For next class my goal is to memorize all of the anatomical features and steps of the intra oral examination and to practice exploring and probing on my best friend the typodont! But for now it is time to go eat my microwave dinner! YUM!

Real Exploring!

Today we had more formal teaching of exploring, it made so much more sense! I am still really hesitant of going fast due to the fact that these are real people! and they have access to my mouth afterwards! I just need to remeber to turn!!!! my goal for next time is to memorize the anatomy and try to pass off my extra oral and maybe my intra oral!

Exploring

We got to explore in our partners mouth today! It was very nerve racking but great to put to practice everything that we are reading in the books! I had a hard time making sure that the shank is parallel to the axis of the tooth! I will go home and practice with my best friend... my typodont!!! Oh joyous day!!!

Intra oral exam

Today we went over the intra oral examintation. I found that I had a hard time remebering the names of the structures, I think I will make some flash cards and illistrations to decide how to do this. I was confused at why we were looking at all these normal things, aren't we suppose to be looking for whats wrong? It made more sense when they told us that if we know whats suppose to be there we know when its wrong! Also it was really cool to look at tonsils! That is not what I thought they were! How stupid is that!

Monday, September 17, 2007

Oh wow!

Real teeth today! That was deffinatly better then those fake things! I was supprised that I was able to catch on to the fulcrom placement on the teeth. I have been trying to put together a little cheat sheet for clinic for quick reference for clinic and important things to remeber for my boards! I think I am going to list all the multiples of 4 so that finding resperations and heart rate so much better! Time to go home and practice my PE's!!!!

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

Need to memorize my 4 times tables!

Today we learned to take blood pressure, pulse, and resperations. I need to remember not to jump the gun and skip the pulse and resperation! Also I need to go buy a watch with a second hand so that I don't have to look up to look down at their chest! It was making me crosseyed! I passed off my positions! Studing helps a whole lot! I was scared but then realized it wasn't that bad! Now just to go through my manuel and texts to make a cheat sheet just for me fot the health histories, just so I don't forget to do something when I start seeing paitients!

Monday, September 10, 2007

Be healthy, it makes your history so much easier!!!

Today we learned how to look over and chart the patients health histories! I got the case senerio that took two papers and had all these heart problems but in the long run she couldn't even be administered becase her ASA 4, and had to be turned away! That was confusing! But then we did our pod partner and it turned out to be a lot easier! Oh good! My goal for the next class is to pass off my postitions!

A long day!

Wow has today draged on for ever, but for the good side I got a lot done! I learned a lot on how to start a clients chart! I'm glad that its not as hard as I thought it would be! I was able to pass off 3, yes that is right, 3 PE's today! That takes a lot of stress off of me! I had some great lab instructures and everything today just made so much more sense. I am still working on the postions for around my patient and which surfaces to clean, hopefully next time I will be able to pass it off. Its a big goal for me but I think I will get it!

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Ok, so I now have survived the first week of clinic!!! I did accomplish my first goal of passing off my first PE of protective equipment! It was like standing on the stage and repeating infrormation no one really cares about but you. It was great! Now I get to pass off eagle soft which I would love to do today if possible. Going over the positions to clean today was a little frusurating because I have never really done it to many times before. If anyone has any tips on good ways to study it, it would help immensily! My goal for the weekend is to be confident in the moving of the mirror, correct terminology, and postitions. Yeah for the weekend!

First Day in Clinical Lab!!!

Ok I'm really glad that this is over!!! I will admit that this was a little overwhelming! The PE don't really make sence but I plan on going home and visualizing it! It's just going to take a lot of studying for me! I was able to remeber where things were for the most part. My goal for next session is able to completly understand and perform the PE that we learned today. That way when I come back I can run through the processes before I have to pass them off!

Back to school!

Look what I learn to do at college!!!!
